Kaiparambu Grama Panchayat - History

The History and Heritage of Kaiparambu, a Land of Cultural and Historical Significance in Thrissur District.

The Period of Royal Rule and Local History

In ancient times, Kaiparambu was a region under the rule of the Thalappilly Swarupam. Later, when the Thalappilly Swarupam was divided into four branches (Manakkulam, Kakkad, Punnathur, and Chirayalam), Kaiparambu and the surrounding areas came under the authority of the Punnathur Raja.

In earlier times, local governance and village assemblies were administered by a local Nair governing body known as the 'Anjoottuvar'. It is believed that the village of 'Anjoor' in the Panchayat derived its name from this governing body.

Toponymic myth / Toponymic legend

  • Geographical Legend: The name 'Kaiparambu' is believed to have originated from the presence of large paddy fields on both sides of the elevated lands, which are said to resemble outstretched hands.
  • Local History: The name “Kaiparambu” is believed to have originated from the steep slope in the area, known as the “Kaiparambu Irakkam.” In earlier times, bullock carts had to be pushed uphill by hand due to the steep gradient. It is said that the area came to be known by this name because it was the land where people known as “Kaiparambis,” who were assigned to push the bullock carts uphill, used to carry out this work.
